Go-Kart Racing Tips: How to Win
Adjust your seat.
Once you’re in your go-kart, it’s time to get comfortable. Reach under your seat and find the lever to adjust the distance between you and the pedals. You’ll need to be close enough to the pedals that you can push “the pedal to the metal”, as they say. You don’t want to be straining to give your kart gas when you need to accelerate.
Maintain your center of gravity.
Here’s a simple tip that is the secret weapon of all talented go-kart drivers: DO NOT lean in to the turns! When approaching a turn, your instinct may be to lean towards the apex, or the inside of the curve. However, that is actually counterproductive. When you lean into the turn, you shift your weight from the center of the kart to the inside wheels, which slows you down.
Instead, keep your weight right in the middle of the seat as you always would, allowing for even weight distribution over all of the wheels, and allowing your kart to perform optimally.
The best racers know that there’s more to winning a race than just speed. It’s also about steering smart—lining yourself up to take every turn and corner as efficiently as possible, and setting yourself up well for the next curve. Barreling through a curve at top speed does you no good if you overshoot the next turn and have to course correct.
Speaking of driving smarter, not faster, you should also use your brakes wisely if you want to get the best time possible on the track. New karters sometimes think that maintaining speed is the most important thing, so they wait too long to brake, or end up having to brake hard.
To conquer the twists and turns of the go-kart track, you need to brake early and gently, allowing you to accelerate as you exit the curve. To put it simply, “slow in = fast out.”
Don’t overthink it.
Of course, at the end of the day, go-karting is just for fun, so let yourself go and enjoy the thrill of the race! If you take a corner too slowly or get passed by another driver, don’t get mad and stiffen up. Stay loose and look for an opening to regain the lead. And hey, worst case scenario, you can enjoy the wind in your hair as you indulge in your need for speed.
